Job Description



The Office of External Affairs manages many of the agency's most critical interactions with the public, from raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors to advancing policies and responding to health emergencies. The Bureau of Communications, housed within the Office of External Affairs, develops culturally responsive public health marketing campaigns; generates and crafts materials to inform New Yorkers of health information and program services, ensuring accessibility for all; provides access to translation services for collateral materials and clinics; maintains the agency's website; and publishes content on the agency's social media platforms. Within Creative Communications, the Content group oversees the writing, editing, and creation of content to inform New Yorkers of key health topics and emergency situations. We are seeking to hire a Strategic Content Editor.



DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

Meticulously write, edit, and proofread agency written communications, including reports and toolkits that contain large amounts of data and research conducted by internal programs on specific subject matter, with great attention to detail.

With an emphasis on longer, more complex materials, such as reports and toolkits, work with internal subject matter experts to write and edit including line-editing, developing content, researching, and proofreading public-facing materials about important health issues for various audiences, which often contain syntheses of data and research for public and provider audiences.

Help review and analyze survey data, field studies, and other methods of research to improve draft content and messaging, organization and structure, tone, and length for materials

Work closely and sometimes individually with program staff and external collaborators to draft substantial portions of complex projects and text and/or perform research to inform content for materials.

Advance the Health Department's mission and strategic plan, researching and generating relevant, accessible, and high-quality written content; fact-checking and researching data and other sources; ensuring that tone and language are accessible, straightforward, and consistent across mediums. Make sure materials are written in plain language and are concise, well-written, and consistent with agency standards.

Participate in style and other editorial meetings to discuss changes to Communications' style; research and troubleshoot issues that impact editorial workflow and processes; and help advise other editors as needed, including with researching and fact-checking sources. Implement style-related changes and additions.

Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Creative Communications team (Marketing, Digital Communications, Language Services, and Design) as projects call for interaction, support, and research.

Support emergency response communications as needed, including writing, editing, researching, and fact-checking content and synthesizing data for emergency materials.

Demonstrate knowledge of writing, storytelling, and strategic, creative, and critical thinking

Clear and exceptional oral and written communication skills

Ability to communicate complex messages through clear and simple design to highly diverse New York City audiences.

Self-motivated with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, tasks, and timelines.

Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with colleagues, direct reports, leadership, and

stakeholders.

Qualifications



1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or

2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Probationary Period

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
