ABOUT THE ROLE

The Workout API team plays a key role in delivering Peloton’s end-to-end workout experience, from the moment a workout begins to when it ends. We’re focused on building reliable, scalable systems that support a seamless fitness journey for millions of members around the world.

We’re looking for a Backend Software Engineer who’s passionate about designing and running high-scale, distributed systems. In this role, you’ll develop the infrastructure and services behind critical member experiences. You’ll work on systems that require thoughtful architecture, high availability, and strong performance by solving challenges around scale, event-driven design, observability, and data modeling.

You’ll contribute to both feature development and the underlying technical foundation that helps our teams move quickly and confidently.

YOUR DAILY IMPACT AT PELOTON

• Build and scale backend services, optimizing for resource utilization, partitioning, and load balancing
• Design event-driven systems using technologies like Kafka, SQS, or similar technologies
• Define and maintain SLIs/SLOs and build observability via structured logging, metrics, and alerting
• Design resilient data models and queries across Postgres, DynamoDB, and OpenSearch
• Implement and tune caching layers (e.g., Redis, Caffeine) for performance and reliability
• Write clean, maintainable code in Kotlin and Python
• Partner with engineers, PMs, and stakeholders to define APIs and technical strategies
• Contribute to system architecture and champion scalable, maintainable patterns

YOU BRING TO PELOTON

• 3+ years building and operating backend services in production environments
• Proven experience building and maintaining distributed systems for high scale, high availability, and low latency
• Proficiency in one or more of our core backend languages: Kotlin, Java, or Python
• Familiarity with microservices and API design (REST, gRPC)
• Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, etc.)
  , with an eye for performance and trade-offs
• Experience working with message queues and even-driven patterns (Kafka, SQS, Pub/Sub)
• Comfort with containerization, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform, and modern deployment practices
• A mindset focused on monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness
• A strong ownership mindset and clear, empathetic communication style
• Ability to navigate ambiguity, ask good questions, and move forward with action

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position based at our New York City headquarters. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including, without limitation, experience and business objectives and if the location for the job changes. Base Salary Range: $140,400 USD - $166,100 USD
