GreenSchool Science Education Intern
Associate Director of School Programs
Position Summary:
GreenSchool offers cross-disciplinary workshops and tours using plants as a lens for inquiry and science explorations for school groups. The intern will support and lead programs in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and across the Garden outdoor seasonal exhibitions with the goal of student experiential learning and appreciation of the natural world. They will engage in cross-departmental operations that exemplify the mission of NYBG.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintain a shared daily school program registration calendar with staff assignments. Coordinate and communicate schedule.
- Support, then lead, Garden inquiry-based plant science and cross-disciplinary workshops and tours for Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school groups (all ability levels, including children with learning differences).
- Participate in a professional learning community of informal science educators to build effective teaching practices.
- Support the set-up of supplies each morning followed by the cleanup, inventory, and preparation of materials each afternoon.
- Support the daily operations and maintenance of the GreenSchool facility including unpacking and transporting supplies, plant seedling care, and classroom cleaning and organization.
- Solicit teacher evaluation of education programs.
- Contribute to special projects as they arise including Community Engagement events.
- Participate in a team to conceive, design, and practice upcoming seasonal program offerings.
- Flexibility to work two special evening events during the school year.
- Undergraduate degree and a background with some familiarity of current museum education practices that emphasize student-driven learning experiences. Strong plant science (ecology, botany, or horticulture), or a self-starter with teaching experience in informal settings preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, are required.
- Able to work in all weather conditions and traverse long distances. Must be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing schedules, program teaching spaces and time constraints. Must be adept at incorporating unique museum resources in a complex and fast-paced environment.
- Outgoing and welcoming personality; responsible, punctual, and motivated. Prior experience and enthusiasm for working with schoolchildren.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, walk; sit; use hands, handle tools, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate or loud work conditions.

Baseline Work Schedule:
- Tuesday-Friday September 16, 2025 through June 12, 2026 9a.m.-5 p.m.
- Must be available for Children’s Education Staff Professional Learning Days September 16-19, 23-26, January 21-22, March 18-19, June 9
Pay Rate: $20.60 Per Hour
