The Staff Associate I will join the laboratory of a Principal Investigator in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The focus of the laboratory is to understand how mucosal immune responses affect repair and maintenance of environmental barriers. Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Staff Associate I will assist with ordering equipment and supplies, organizing the laboratory space, and managing the laboratory's mouse colony to integrate in vivo models that assess immune function. These studies involve working with animals, preparation of immune cells from mouse tissue for flow cytometric analysis and sorting, and other molecular and cell biology techniques. The Staff Associate I will also handle administrative issues for the PI, assist with managing the budget; manage inventory of samples or data; ensure that equipment or machinery is operating and maintained properly; assist with coordinating laboratory collaborations; coordinate meetings and events; assist with the preparation of materials for publications, funding, and compliance; manage scheduling under the PI's direction to ensure that deadlines are met; and coordinate and work with external or partner organizations.Essential Functions:- Carrying out and assisting with experiments and maintaining scientific records (20%).- Maintenance of laboratory mouse colony (20%)- Ordering and maintaining lab supplies/equipment and research databases (20%)- Preparing solutions and performing other related duties necessary to the functioning of laboratory and research projects (20%)- Coordinating new member intake/training new members in laboratory techniques and handling laboratory administration, including inventory, scheduling, and coordinating with a collaborative laboratory (20%)Responsibilities include: mouse husbandry, ordering and maintaining lab supplies, records and equipment; preparation of common stock solutions and reagents; and performing other related duties, as assigned.Experimental duties include: Isolation, tissue culture, and activation of primary mouse immune cells from lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues, including lymph nodes, spleen, lung, intestines, liver, adipose tissue and skin; and performing other related duties necessary to the functioning of the laboratory.Other requirements:- The ability to work independently, under minimal supervision, following appropriate training- Knowledge of basic chemical and/or biological terminology and techniques- Experience with flow cytometry and other sophisticated laboratory equipment- Ability to research literature applicable to the field- Ability to present experimental data to the Principal Investigator- Ability to perform work in a neat and orderly manner in accordance with safety regulations- Computer literacy: proficiency with Microsoft Office and other graphical and data analysis software- Excellent motivation, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills Minimum Qualifications for Grade Applicant: Requires a Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or similar field and at least ~2 years of related experience or equivalent training in a research lab setting (independent research performed while pursuing Bachelor's - or higher - Degree counts toward this qualification).Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications: Previous experience working in a research lab environment studying immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, or biochemistry is required.Preferred Qualifications: Mouse handling and husbandry experience, lab management experience.Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / VeteranPay Transparency DisclosureThe salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
